Brooklyn authorities investigate mass poisoning of cats and raccoons

Authorities in Brooklyn are investigating a mass animal poisoning incident in the Bath Beach neighborhood that has resulted in the deaths of at least 18 cats and 3 raccoons. Albert Berto, a local resident who has cared for the community cats for eight years, discovered numerous carcasses near his terrace, noting that many victims exhibited bleeding from the mouth and nose.

Animal welfare activists reported that private veterinary examinations found high levels of rodenticide in the deceased cats. While official autopsies are pending to confirm the exact cause of death, community members suspect intentional poisoning. Local officials, including State Senator Jessica Ramos and State Assemblyman William Colton, have called for a thorough investigation.

The NYPD Animal Cruelty Task Force and the ASPCA are currently leading the inquiry. Law enforcement has offered a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. Under New York State law, poisoning animals is a misdemeanor that can carry a sentence of up to one year in prison and a fine.
