Brooklyn house fire kills six and injures nine in Sunset Park

A devastating fire tore through a two-story residential row house in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn early Thursday morning, resulting in at least six deaths and nine injuries. Four adults were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others died after being transported to local hospitals.

More than 230 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the blaze, which was reported shortly before 1:40 a.m. Fire officials reported that flames were present on every floor, including the basement, and were blowing out of the windows upon their arrival. Firefighters successfully rescued four individuals who had become trapped behind window bars at the rear of the property.

The nine injured include six civilians, with two reported to be in critical condition, as well as three firefighters and two police officers who sustained minor injuries. Eight displaced residents have been relocated to hotels.

While a lithium-ion battery was recovered from the scene, investigators have not yet determined if it was the cause of the fire. Fire marshals and the FDNY continue to investigate the origin of the blaze. Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as a “devastating” tragedy for the community.
