Brooklyn nurse Jiayi Zheng killed in hit-and-run crash

Jiayi Zheng, a 28-year-old nurse at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, on Saturday, August 29. Zheng was walking home from an overnight shift in her hospital scrubs when a black Cadillac sedan ran a red light at the intersection of 55th Street and Third Avenue, striking her.

Zheng was transported to the same hospital where she worked, but she succumbed to severe head and neck injuries. Surveillance footage captured the collision, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. The driver, who reportedly had Pennsylvania license plates, fled the scene and remains at large. NYPD investigators have identified the vehicle as a 2014 Cadillac sedan.

Local officials and advocacy groups have highlighted the danger of the area. State Senator Andrew Gounardes noted that a Department of Transportation redesign plan for Third Avenue was presented in 2023 but has not been implemented. According to Transportation Alternatives, Zheng is the 11th person killed while walking or biking on this two-mile stretch of Third Avenue since 2014. Additionally, she is the ninth person killed by a hit-and-run driver in New York City within the last two weeks.
