Brooklyn Trinidad and Tobago Independence Parade canceled amid NYPD dispute

The inaugural Trinidad and Tobago Independence Parade, scheduled for August 30 in Brooklyn, has been canceled following a dispute between event organizers and the New York Police Department (NYPD).

Organizers Juju Williamson and Terrance LaPierre reported that they were asked to alter the parade route and date following an incident at a recent Jamaican Day parade. Although they claim to have complied with these requested changes, they were subsequently issued a notice of rejection citing traffic and staffing concerns. The NYPD has denied canceling the event, stating instead that the parade never received official approval and that organizers were offered opportunities to propose alternative arrangements.

Local community members, including Pastor Louis Straker, Jr., have expressed mixed emotions and frustration over the decision. While some acknowledge the logistical challenges and public safety concerns associated with large Caribbean parades, others view the permit denial as a significant blow to the diaspora community's ability to celebrate cultural milestones.
