Broward County judge faces backlash for discussing cooking with domestic violence suspect

Judge Allison Gilman of Broward County, Florida, is facing criticism after a video surfaced showing her engaging in lighthearted conversation about cooking with a defendant accused of domestic violence.

During a bond hearing, Gilman reportedly learned that Christopher Johnson, who is accused of punching his ex-girlfriend and pulling her hair, works as a chef. The judge then asked Johnson for cooking advice, specifically regarding how to avoid making steak chewy or overcooked. The exchange, which included the judge laughing at Johnson's tips, has since gone viral.

The victim of the alleged assault expressed distress over the interaction, stating that the conversation made it appear as though the situation was being treated as a joke and could signal to survivors that they may not receive justice. Dr. Linda Parker, CEO of Women in Distress, also criticized the judge's conduct. The chief judge of Broward County stated they are aware of the clip but declined to comment further.
