Brown bear encounters reported in Italy's Trentino region
The Trentino region near Lake Garda, Italy, is home to an estimated 100 brown bears living in its forests and mountains. While these animals typically avoid human contact, several incidents have been documented.
In April 2024, a hiker near Molveno was reportedly followed by a bear for approximately fifteen minutes before the animal lost interest. In July 2024, a 43-year-old French tourist was attacked by a female bear near the municipality of Dro, resulting in injuries to his arms and legs and the subsequent shooting of the bear.
Local tourism authorities advise hikers to remain calm during encounters and warn against screaming or running away. If a bear is spotted from a distance, travelers are encouraged to backtrack along their original path.
