Brown bears involved in two separate incidents in Palacios del Sil

Two separate incidents involving brown bears have occurred in the municipality of Palacios del Sil, located in the El Bierzo region of León, within a single week.

On September 1, a driver struck a brown bear on the CL-631 road near the Ondinas reservoir. While the impact caused material damage to the vehicle, the animal managed to flee the scene. Although technicians from the Territorial Environmental Service did not initially find the bear, they were able to confirm its well-being via GPS tracking, as the individual is radio-tagged.

This follows the discovery of a dead brown bear on the night of August 31 in the Salientes area, also within Palacios del Sil. The carcass was transported to the Wildlife Recovery Center in Valladolid, where a necropsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death. The presence of bears is frequent in the Alto Sil area, often leading to local concerns regarding property damage in nearby villages.
