Brown bears reported dead in separate incidents in Spain
Multiple deaths of brown bears have been reported in Spain, highlighting ongoing challenges for the species. In Campoo de Enmedio, a subadult male weighing approximately 80 kilograms was killed after being struck by a freight train near Cañeda. This marks the first recorded instance of a brown bear being hit by a train in Spain.
In a separate incident in Matarrosa del Sil, a young brown bear was found dead in the Ondinas-Peñadrada canal. Preliminary assessments suggest the animal may have accidentally fallen into the canal and been unable to escape.
Authorities, including the Brown Bear Foundation and local environmental services, are conducting necropsies to confirm exact causes of death. These incidents occur amid a growing Cantabrian brown bear population and increasing reports of human-wildlife conflicts, including recent allegations of harassment of bears from moving vehicles.
