Brown University President Christina Paxson Announces Resignation
Brown University President Christina Paxson said she will leave her post at the end of the 2026‑27 academic year, ending a 15‑year tenure that began in July 2012. She extended her term twice to help the university navigate a federal funding freeze threatened by the Trump administration, a pandemic and a deadly campus shooting.
The funding dispute was settled in July 2025, restoring more than $510 million in withheld federal contracts and grants. During her leadership Brown’s endowment grew to $8 billion, the campus received over $2 billion in investments—including about $700 million for redeveloping Providence’s Jewelry District—and two new schools were created. Former MIT professor was killed in the December shooting that also left two students dead and nine wounded. Bank of America CEO and Brown alumnus Brian Moynihan praised Paxson’s academic and operational achievements. Paxson and her husband plan to remain in the Providence community after her departure.
