Bruce Baird, former Australian politician, dies at 84
Former Australian Liberal politician Bruce Baird has died at the age of 84. He held significant roles in both state and federal politics, serving as the NSW member for Northcott from 1984 to 1995 and later representing the federal seat of Cook from 1998 until his retirement before the 2007 election.
During his time in state politics, Baird served in several ministries, including Tourism Minister and Minister for the Sydney Olympic Games, playing a key role in the success of the 2000 Olympics. He also served as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party in 1993. His retirement from the seat of Cook paved the way for future Prime Minister Scott Morrison to enter parliament.
Baird is the father of former NSW Premier Mike Baird and journalist Julia Baird. The NSW Liberal Party described him as a ‘party stalwart’ and a ‘greatly respected politician’ who served the people of New South Wales with distinction.
