Bruce Baird, former NHVR Chair and Australian politician, passes away
Bruce Baird, the inaugural Chair of the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) Board and a prominent figure in Australian public service, has passed away. Baird was instrumental in the establishment and strategic direction of the NHVR, helping to create Australia’s first national heavy vehicle regulator.
His career included significant roles in both state and federal politics. He served in the New South Wales Parliament and represented the federal seat of Cook from 1998 to 2007. During his time in state government, he held ministerial portfolios including Transport, Roads, and Tourism, and was a key figure in securing the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
In addition to his political and regulatory work, Baird was recognized for his humanitarian efforts, specifically his advocacy for refugees and his role as Chair of the Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council in 2008. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for his service to public life. Tributes from political leaders, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, described him as a principled leader and a true parliamentarian.
