Bruce Blakeman narrows Kathy Hochul's lead in NY governor race

The race for New York Governor is tightening as Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County Executive, narrows the lead held by incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul. According to a recent Siena College poll of likely voters, Hochul leads Blakeman 49% to 39%, a significant decrease from a 20-point lead recorded in June.

Blakeman has received a major boost from former President Donald Trump, who issued a “Complete and Total Endorsement” for the Republican, describing him as a “FANTASTIC guy” and a supporter of the MAGA movement. Blakeman has campaigned on platforms of tax relief, lower utility costs, and increased public safety.

The campaign has also faced controversy regarding the use of artificial intelligence. Democratic leaders filed a formal complaint with the Board of Elections, accusing Blakeman of using AI-generated ads that distort reality. Blakeman dismissed the criticism, stating that the effectiveness of the ads proves they are resonating with voters.

Despite the narrowing gap, Hochul maintains advantages on several key issues, including affordable housing and economic affordability. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has signaled his support for Hochul’s reelection, noting a willingness to cooperate on municipal issues despite their differing political ideologies.
