Bruce Campbell discusses studio distrust and new independent film
Actor Bruce Campbell has expressed a lasting distrust of the Hollywood studio system following an early career experience where he was “kicked out” of a lead role in his first studio film. Campbell stated that the project was eventually re-edited, retitled, and never released, leaving him with a “very sour” impression of major studios.
Seeking to regain the creative freedom he experienced while making the original “Evil Dead,” Campbell has moved toward independent production. His latest project, “Ernie & Emma,” was written, directed, produced, and starred in by Campbell. The film was shot in southern Oregon and features Campbell as Ernie Tyler, a pear salesman navigating grief while following his late wife Emma’s instructions for scattering her ashes.
Campbell produced the film alongside his wife and longtime partner, Ida Gearon. The production allowed Campbell to maintain complete creative control, a departure from his previous experiences with studio-led projects.
