Bruce Hales to defend Plymouth Brethren Christian Church before Australian Parliament
Bruce Hales, the global leader of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (PBCC), is set to appear before a joint standing committee of the Australian Parliament. Hales intends to argue that the PBCC is a mainstream religion, amid ongoing scrutiny regarding the group's practices.
Former members, including Lindy Jacomb, have characterized the organization as a coercive and high-demand cult rather than a religion. Jacomb, who was excommunicated in 2008, described the impact of the church's shunning practices, which involve cutting off all contact with excommunicated members, including immediate family.
Testimonies highlight extreme social isolation, such as members being forced to treat excommunicated relatives as if they were deceased. Additional allegations include surveillance of members and controversial sermons regarding those who question the church's leadership.
