Bruce Highway upgrades begin in North Queensland
Construction has commenced on two major upgrade packages for the Bruce Highway between Ingham and Cardwell in North Queensland. These projects aim to enhance road safety and improve flood immunity to reduce closures during the wet season.
The Gairloch to Ripple Creek section will undergo road widening, culvert replacement, and drainage improvements. A second project covering the Ingham-Halifax-Bemerside Road and Cardwell Range section will also focus on road widening and safety treatments. These works are part of a broader effort to strengthen a critical freight corridor that connects regional centers, ports, and farms.
Additionally, upgrades are planned for the heavy vehicle rest area at the Kalpowar Road intersection near Kolonga. This $13.76 million contract includes the construction of new northbound and southbound facilities featuring parking for six heavy vehicles, toilets, and picnic shelters. The northbound rest area is expected to be closed for upgrades through late 2027.
