Bruce Mac Master resigns as ANDI president amid government tensions

Bruce Mac Master has resigned from his position as president of the National Association of Businessmen of Colombia (ANDI) after more than 13 years in the role. In a three-page resignation letter, Mac Master cited “multiple pressures” and “unexpected and worrying circumstances” that compromised the organization’s ability to operate with autonomy and fulfill its functions.

The resignation follows weeks of escalating tension between the ANDI and the administration of President Abelardo De La Espriella. Mac Master noted that despite efforts to maintain institutional dialogue, communication channels with the Executive branch had effectively broken down. Reports indicated that the government may have restricted meetings between ministers and the ANDI leadership.

The departure has ignited a national debate regarding the independence of business guilds from political influence. While Interior Minister Rodrigo Lara characterized the resignation as an autonomous internal decision of the ANDI, other political figures, including Juan Manuel Galán and Representative Daniel Briceño, expressed concerns over the erosion of institutional checks and balances. Former President Gustavo Petro also commented on the situation, criticizing the current government's industrial direction and its impact on the national economy.
