Bruce Springsteen’s 1976 New Jersey Residency Amid Legal Battle

In the second half of 1976 Bruce Springsteen was barred from recording new material after a lawsuit with his former manager Mike Appel. The court order prevented him from entering the studio with his preferred producer Jon Landau, forcing him to rely on live performances to support himself and the E Street Band.

Between March 25 and May 28, 1976 the band undertook a grueling “Chicken Scratch Tour” of southern venues. After a summer break in New Jersey, Springsteen organized a six‑night residency at the Monmouth Arts Center in Red Bank, New Jersey, aimed at his hometown fans. The fall leg of the schedule was informally called the “Lawsuit Tour,” reflecting the ongoing legal constraints. In his 2016 memoir *Born to Run*, Springsteen wrote that the only thing he could not lose was himself and his music.

The residency and subsequent touring kept the band financially afloat while the legal dispute was resolved.
