Bruce Straley apologizes to God of War: Laufey developers
Bruce Straley, the former Naughty Dog director known for his work on ‘The Last of Us’, has issued an apology to the developers of ‘God of War: Laufey’ at Santa Monica Studio. The apology follows an interview with Edge magazine in which Straley criticized the current state of AAA game development, describing many modern high-budget experiences as ‘boring’ due to a lack of innovation.
While Straley praised the visual fidelity and technical skill of ‘God of War: Laufey’, stating that ‘every pixel is mindblowing’, he expressed a lack of excitement regarding the actual gameplay mechanics. He argued that the industry is increasingly risk-averse, focusing on repetitive mechanics and chasing the success of live-service models rather than introducing fresh ideas.
Straley clarified his position on X (formerly Twitter), stating that his decision to name the specific title was a mistake that resulted in ‘uninvited and unnecessary negative attention’ for the team. He emphasized that his critique was intended to address broader industry concerns regarding the erosion of innovation and the lack of creative risk-taking in large-scale productions.
