Bruce Straley criticizes AAA video games as boring

Bruce Straley, the former co-director of The Last of Us and Uncharted series at Naughty Dog, has criticized the modern AAA gaming industry, describing current high-budget experiences as “boring.” In an interview with Edge magazine, Straley noted that while technical achievements and visual fidelity in blockbuster titles have reached incredible heights, there is a significant lack of innovation and risk-taking in gameplay.

Straley cited the upcoming title God of War Laufey as an example. He praised the immense skill and craftsmanship behind its visuals, stating that “every pixel is mindblowing,” but expressed that the actual gameplay mechanics fail to excite him. He clarified that his critique is not directed at specific development teams, such as Santa Monica Studio, but rather at a systemic industry trend where publishers and investors favor safe, repetitive formulas over fresh ideas.

Having left Naughty Dog in 2017 due to burnout, Straley now leads Wildflower Interactive. His studio focuses on smaller, more creative, and unique projects, such as Coven of the Chicken Foot, which stands in contrast to the massive, formulaic structures typical of the AAA sector.
