Bruce Willis makes rare public appearance despite dementia battle

Hollywood actor Bruce Willis, 71, was photographed riding as a passenger in a car through Studio City, Los Angeles, on July 19. The sighting is described as an ultra‑rare public appearance for the former "Die Hard" star, who has been living with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) since a diagnosis in 2023 after an earlier aphasia diagnosis in 2022.

Willis appeared calm, wearing a blue jacket and a navy cap. His wife of 17 years, Emma Heming, told the Bossticks podcast that the disorder primarily affects his speech rather than memory, explaining, "The one that Bruce has affects language, but there's another variant that will affect behaviour and another one that could affect movement." She added that many people mistakenly equate dementia with memory loss, noting that "Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, but FTD is the most common form of dementia for people under the age of 60." As his condition progressed, Heming said she made the difficult decision to move Willis to the family’s second home to better suit the needs of their daughters. The family, including daughters Mabel (14), Evel (12) and older children from previous relationships, rallied around him, using the moment to raise awareness of FTD.
