Mecklenburg-Vorpommern reports rise in election-related crimes
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has recorded an increase in election-related crimes compared to the previous state election in 2021. According to the State Criminal Police Office, over 490 offenses were identified by September 23, 2026, up from 277 in 2021.
The majority of these incidents involve property damage or the theft of election posters. While the total number of targeted posters remained similar to previous years, there was a significant rise in the number of individual reports filed, often involving only a single poster per report.
Specific offenses recorded include 303 cases of property damage, 83 thefts, and 29 instances of using symbols of unconstitutional or terrorist organizations. Other reported crimes include insults, defamation of political figures, threats, incitement to hatred, and cases of bodily harm. The most frequently targeted posters belonged to the AfD, followed by the SPD and Die Linke.
