Bruges approves 260,000 euro green redevelopment for Sint-Pieterszuidstraat

The city of Bruges has approved a 260,000 euro redevelopment project for the Sint-Pieterszuidstraat in the Kaaidistrict. The initiative focuses on increasing urban greenery and improving climate resilience by removing approximately 2,030 square meters of paving to make room for trees, green zones, and water infiltration systems (wadi’s).

The project aims to mitigate the effects of heavy rainfall and heatwaves while improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists. To address traffic issues, the city plans to implement barriers to prevent through-traffic on several streets, including the small Sint-Pieterszuidstraat and Beekweg, while maintaining accessibility for emergency services, waste collection, and local businesses.

Funding for the works will be provided through the city’s climate fund, mobility budget, and European support via the Horizon Europe Re-Value project.
