Brugge restores historical monuments using eco-friendly steam cleaning

The city of Brugge has completed the cleaning of several historical monuments using eco-friendly steam technology. The main entrance of Sebrechtspark on the Oude Zak was treated by the firm STOOOM, costing 3,840 euros excluding VAT. The process removed moss, algae, and buildup accumulated over years without the use of chemical agents.

In addition to the Sebrechtspark entrance, the Pro Patriapoort in the Karthuizerinnenstraat and the Octogon—a yellow artwork by Renaat Ramon located on the Koning Albert I-laan roundabout—also received steam cleaning.

Pieter Marechal, the Alderman for Heritage, stated that the city aims to care for both large buildings and smaller monuments. The use of hot steam is preferred for valuable stone elements as it is gentler than high-pressure washing and avoids chemical cleaners, aligning with the city's sustainability goals.
