Brugherio mourns missionary Giuseppe Fumagalli

The municipality of Brugherio has declared a period of mourning following the death of Father Giuseppe Fumagalli, a missionary who spent over 50 years serving in Guinea-Bissau. Fumagalli, born in 1939 and ordained in the Milan Cathedral in 1964, passed away on August 29.

A member of the Pontificio Istituto Missioni Estere, he was primarily active in the Suzana mission among the Felupe people. His work included founding Christian communities, translating sacred and liturgical texts into local languages, and providing spiritual and human development for the populations under his care. He was noted for his presence during Guinea-Bissau's transition to independence in 1974.

Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, September 2, at the Church of San Bartolomeo. In recognition of his lifelong service, the municipality had previously awarded him an Honorary Mention in 2024.
