Bruno Bušić: Commemoration of the Croatian dissident and journalist
A scientific symposium titled “Bruno Bušić – Life and Work” has commenced at the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb. The event honors the life of the Croatian dissident, journalist, and political emigrant who was assassinated in Paris in 1978.
Speakers at the symposium, including Dražen Budiša and Mate Ljubičić, shared personal recollections of Bušić’s activism and his role in the Croatian diaspora. Discussions highlighted his political views, his imprisonment during the Croatian Spring, and his belief that Franjo Tuđman was the figure capable of establishing a free Croatian state.
Bušić was killed in Paris by an agent of the Yugoslav secret police, UDBA, who ambushed him and fired five shots. While allegations surfaced following the breakup of Yugoslavia suggesting the assassination was approved by Josip Broz Tito and carried out by Vinko Sindičić, a Zagreb court previously acquitted Sindičić of responsibility.
