Bruno Fernandes sues Band for R$ 4 million

Former goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes has filed a lawsuit against the Brazilian broadcaster Band and journalist Catia Fonseca, seeking R$ 4 million in compensation for moral damages and violation of image rights.

The legal action, currently proceeding in the 1st Civil Court of Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, alleges that the network engaged in persecution through reports aired on the program ‘Melhor da Tarde’ starting in 2022. Fernandes, who was convicted in 2010 for the murder of Eliza Samudio, claims that the sensationalist nature of these reports and specific criticisms made by Fonseca have hindered his efforts toward professional reintegration and employment.

Fernandes specifically cited remarks made by Fonseca regarding his relationship with his son, which he argues damaged his reputation. While the plaintiff previously attempted to block the broadcast of such reports, the judiciary denied those requests, citing that freedom of expression remains the rule and noting that the plaintiff is a public figure involved in a high-profile criminal case.
