Bruno Retailleau proposes pension and labor reforms for 2027

Bruno Retailleau, leader of Les Républicains and a candidate for the 2027 French presidential election, has unveiled a major platform focused on pension and labor reform.

His pension proposal includes lowering the minimum retirement age to 63, though with a significant 7% annual penalty for those retiring at that age. He aims to guarantee a full pension automatically at age 65, regardless of total contribution quarters, a reduction from the current age of 67. Retailleau intends to link the age for a full pension to life expectancy and proposes a capitalization-based pension component for younger workers, aiming for it to represent 25% to 30% of their retirement income. The plan seeks to save 40 billion euros over five years.

Additionally, Retailleau has pledged to abolish the legal 35-hour work week. He proposes leaving working hours to collective bargaining within companies and suggests an incentive where employees working an extra 30 minutes per day would see no social security contributions on hours worked beyond the 36th hour. This stance puts him in direct opposition to Édouard Philippe, who supports maintaining the 35-hour framework while increasing flexibility within companies.
