Brusly man sentenced to 49 years for manslaughter and evidence destruction

Tyler Davis, 20, has been sentenced to 49 years in prison following a guilty plea for manslaughter, obstruction of justice, and unauthorized entry into an inhabited dwelling. The sentencing follows the December 2024 killing of 18-year-old Ja'Morius Mitchell in a sugarcane field in West Baton Rouge Parish.

According to District Attorney Tony Clayton, Davis shot Mitchell twice from behind and subsequently set the field on fire in an attempt to destroy the body and evidence. The victim's remains were discovered by local farmers while they were attempting to extinguish the flames. Davis was later apprehended in Baton Rouge by the Middle District of Louisiana Fugitive Task Force after a period of flight.
