Brussels bans e-scooters in 19 districts to combat drug crime
Brussels authorities have implemented a ban on e-scooters in 19 districts to curb drug-related violence and facilitate criminal escapes. The police ordinance, signed by Minister-President Boris Dilliès, prohibits both private and rental e-scooters from being operated or parked in public spaces within the affected areas.
The targeted zones include neighborhoods around the North and South stations, Matonge, and known drug trafficking hubs in Anderlecht and Molenbeek. Officials noted that criminals utilize the agility of e-scooters to evade police checkpoints and maintain mobility during shootings.
Data indicates a significant link between the vehicles and local violence. Since the beginning of 2025, 175 shootings have been recorded in the city, 125 of which were connected to the drug trade. In 56 of these incidents, e-scooters played a role. In addition to the scooter ban, the new regulations include restrictions on public alcohol consumption between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. in certain areas, limits on pyrotechnics sales, and expanded police powers for identity checks.
