Brussels employees adopt remote work as the new norm

Data from the Brussels Institute of Statistics and Analysis (BISA) indicates that remote work has become a standard for more than half of the employees in the Brussels-Capital Region. As of 2025, 55 percent of the local workforce and commuters work from home at least part-time, a significant increase from 2019 when only 25 percent engaged in remote work.

There has been a notable rise in intensive teleworking, defined as working from home for at least half of one's working hours, which grew from 2 percent in 2019 to 25 percent in 2025. A disparity exists between commuters and local residents, with 62 percent of commuters working remotely compared to 47 percent of residents.

Broadly, the debate regarding the necessity of returning to physical offices is shifting toward how organizations manage collaboration. The focus is moving away from the location of work toward the ability to maintain performance and connectivity within distributed, international, and mobile teams.
