Brussels extends city center alcohol ban for four years
The City of Brussels has extended its alcohol ban in the city center for an additional four years. The restricted zone encompasses the central pedestrian area and much of the city center, including areas around the Rogier, IJzer, and Sint-Katelijne metro stations, as well as several specific streets and the quay district.
The ban operates 24 hours a day, with exceptions for hospitality terraces and officially sanctioned commercial, festive, or sporting events. Violators face administrative fines of up to 500 euros.
Mayor Philippe Close acknowledged that the measure is “not an enjoyable one” but described it as one of several tools used to combat addiction issues. While the measure aims to manage public order, opposition members have raised concerns regarding its effectiveness and social impact, suggesting a need for more social support measures alongside enforcement.
