Brussels faces fiscal crisis amid high debt and budget deficit

The new regional government in Brussels faces a severe fiscal crisis following a 613-day political impasse. The region is struggling with a massive budget deficit and high debt levels, necessitating significant austerity measures.

According to a 2025 study by the National Bank, Brussels serves as Belgium’s economic engine but faces significant funding challenges. The study indicates that interregional solidarity mechanisms result in an annual transfer of 25.4 billion from Brussels to other regions.

In response to these financial pressures, the Louis Paul Boonkring is seeking to initiate discussions regarding more equitable financing for the region. There are also calls to clarify the relationship between Brussels and its periphery, including potential proposals for a metropolitan community to manage shared competencies such as mobility, spatial planning, and healthcare.
