Bordeaux wildfires draw German aid and climate‑action call
Since 22 July, massive wildfires have been raging across the southwest of France, notably in the Bordeaux region, and have also affected parts of Spain. French authorities say roughly 220,000 people have been moved to safety and about 42,000 ha of forest and bushland have been destroyed.
German officials have responded with both political and material support. Vice‑minister‑president Manuel Hagel of Baden‑Württemberg offered two police helicopters equipped with 900‑litre water tanks, while the Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider used the crisis to press for greater climate‑protection priority. Around 60 firefighters from Alsace (Haut‑Rhin and Bas‑Rhin) were also dispatched to the Gironde and Var departments. The EU civil‑protection mechanism, activated more than 830 times since 2001, has been invoked, and the Baden‑Württemberg Forest Chamber has called for a package of measures including resilient infrastructure, faster reforestation funding and AI‑based fire detection.
