Bordeaux wildfires draw German aid and spur climate‑action warnings
Wildfires raging in the Bordeaux region of southwestern France have devastated about 42,000 hectares of forest and bushland, the largest blaze in the area. Authorities say roughly 220,000 people have been moved to safety.
Germany has responded with multiple forms of assistance. The Baden‑Württemberg state offered two police helicopters equipped with 900‑liter water tanks, and around 60 firefighters from Alsace were deployed to the Gironde and Var departments. The Bundeswehr dispatched CH‑53 transport helicopters and an A400M aircraft carrying fire‑fighting material for a five‑day operation. French officials activated the EU civil‑protection mechanism, which has been used more than 830 times since 2001.
German Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider used the crisis to call for urgent climate‑protection measures, stressing that climate change is a painful reality for Europe. The Baden‑Württemberg Forest Chamber also urged a package of measures, including resilient infrastructure, faster reforestation funding and AI‑based fire‑detection technology.
