Brussels gas explosions injure three near central station

Two consecutive gas explosions occurred in central Brussels near the main railway station, affecting a building that houses an authority responsible for the European Banking Union's resolution processes.

The incident was reportedly caused by human error during construction work, where workers accidentally drilled through a low-pressure gas pipe. This led to a gas buildup within the building, resulting in the detonations.

Three people sustained burn injuries: two employees of the gas network operator, Sibelga, and one firefighter. Rescue efforts were complicated by reports that one of the injured individuals fell into a deep pit following the blast. Approximately 100 people were evacuated from the area as a precaution while emergency services worked to secure the site and shut off the gas flow.
