Brussels plans green and inclusive redesign of Place du Nouveau Marché aux Grains

The City of Brussels has applied for planning permission to undergo a major redesign of the Place du Nouveau Marché aux Grains. Scheduled to begin in autumn 2027, the project aims to transform the downtown square into a greener, more inclusive urban space.

Key features of the overhaul include increasing biodiversity and reducing urban heat islands by planting 16 new trees to complement the 60 existing ones. The redesign will also improve rainwater permeability. To encourage social interaction, the city plans to introduce new amenities such as swings, a water fountain, and areas for table tennis, pétanque, and informal play, alongside the current basketball court.

Urban planning councillor Anaïs Maes stated the goal is to create a versatile meeting place where all residents feel safe and welcome, with a specific focus on making the space more attractive to women and girls. The project will also feature a new light sculpture titled ‘Midnight Sun’ and redesigned car access to prioritize pedestrian activities like picnics and rest areas.
