Brussels police officer Nordine El Talbi fatally shot during investigation

Nordine El Talbi, a 41-year-old experienced inspector with the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles anti-gang unit, was fatally shot on Monday night. The incident occurred while El Talbi was conducting undercover reconnaissance related to a carjacking investigation.

El Talbi, who joined the police force in 2009 and had spent seven years in the specialized anti-gang unit, was found with a single gunshot wound to the head. Despite resuscitation efforts, he could not be saved. Police Chief Michel Goovaerts noted the difficulty of ensuring total protection for highly trained officers in such high-risk environments.

Colleagues and community members have remembered El Talbi as a dedicated officer who was deeply connected to the local population. He was noted for his ability to de-escalate tense situations and his commitment to protecting the Brussels community.
