Brussels Prosecutor claims unnamed deputy sought prisoner release

Julien Moinil, the Prosecutor of the King in Brussels, has sparked political tension after revealing an anecdote regarding an unnamed Brussels Parliament member. During a security conference organized by Le Soir, Moinil stated that a deputy had contacted him to request the release of a detained individual.

Moinil noted that he rejected the request with sarcasm, citing concerns over the integrity and competence of certain elected officials. While the Brussels prosecutor's office clarified that no criminal offense was committed because no bribe or advantage was offered, the incident has raised significant ethical questions regarding the separation of powers.

Political reactions have been divided. Zakia Khattabi, leader of the Ecolo group, criticized the prosecutor for casting suspicion on all regional deputies without naming the specific individual involved. Conversely, Parliament President Bertin Mampaka emphasized the importance of adhering to deontological rules and the separation of powers. Following a meeting of group leaders, the Brussels Parliament decided not to summon Moinil for a formal hearing.
