Brussels security funds under scrutiny for alleged misuse

An investigation has been launched into the potential misuse of €55 million in annual federal security funds allocated to Brussels. These funds are intended to support the capital’s international role and ensure security during European summits, with €35 million designated for police zones and €20 million for municipalities.

Reports from the Finance Inspectorate and whistleblowers suggest that significant portions of this budget have been diverted to unrelated expenditures. Documented items include trips to Disneyland, social housing payments, and the installation of public toilets. Other reported costs involve household items such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, trash bags, and laundry services, as well as meals for the homeless.

Specific discrepancies include an €828,000 transfer to a social housing association in 2020 and €3 million allocated to a cybersecurity center that was never constructed. While some officials previously described these diversions as “bookkeeping adjustments,” lawmakers are now demanding a full audit to ensure accountability for every euro intended for public safety.
