Brussels Grand-Place hosts massive Japanese-inspired flower carpet

The 24th edition of the Brussels Flower Carpet has transformed the Grand-Place into a massive floral tribute inspired by Japanese art. Designed by Japanese artist Hiro Sugiyama, the installation recreates Katsushika Hokusai’s iconic woodblock print, ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’.

The display covers approximately 1,680 square meters and is composed of over 700,000 flowers. Due to recent heatwaves in Europe, designers utilized Belgian dahlias, which have higher water content, to ensure the longevity of the piece. The installation measures roughly 70 meters in length and 24 meters in width.

This year’s theme celebrates the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belgium and Japan. The event, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors, serves as a cultural symbol of cooperation between the two nations. In addition to the daytime display, the event includes evening music and light shows.
