Bryan Kohberger Assigned New Lawyer Amid Family Calls Life Sentence Inadequate
Bryan Kohberger, the man who pleaded guilty to the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, has been assigned a new attorney, Greg Rauch of Moscow, Idaho. Rauch will represent Kohberger in a post‑conviction relief petition filed in July 2026, in which Kohberger claims he was "convinced to falsely confess" and alleges that exculpatory DNA evidence was withheld. Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador said his office is prepared to act to ensure justice is fully carried out.
The family of victim Kaylee Goncalves, who was killed in the attack, told the media that a life‑without‑parole sentence does not constitute a real death penalty. They criticized the conditions of Kohberger's imprisonment, describing his access to vegan meals and educational opportunities as too comfortable, and called for harsher punishment.
