Bryan Kohberger plea withdrawal bid centers on ability to understand court rulings
Newly unsealed court documents reveal that Bryan Kohberger’s defense team previously informed an Idaho judge that the former criminology doctoral student struggled to rationally understand court proceedings. According to a May 2025 memo, counsel advised the court that Kohberger had difficulty comprehending adverse rulings and discerning their impact on his case, including significant developments regarding the death penalty and suppression issues.
Kohberger, who is currently serving four consecutive life sentences without parole for the stabbings of four University of Idaho students, is attempting to withdraw his guilty plea. His current attorney, Greg Rauch, argues that these issues regarding Kohberger’s ability to make consequential decisions must be explored.
Idaho prosecutors are urging a judge to reject the bid to withdraw the plea, characterizing the defense’s legal maneuvers as a ‘fishing expedition.’ Rauch noted that the information was originally filed under seal to support a motion to disqualify the judge, aiming to bolster arguments regarding potential judicial bias rather than to prove incompetence.
