Bryan Kohberger seeks to withdraw guilty plea in Idaho murder case

Bryan Kohberger, convicted of the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, is launching a legal effort to withdraw his guilty plea and return the case to trial. Kohberger, who is currently serving four life sentences without parole, filed a post-conviction relief petition alleging that his previous plea was not entered knowingly or voluntarily.

In his petition, Kohberger claims he received ineffective assistance of counsel and was induced to plead guilty through unkept promises and threats from his former legal team. He has asserted his actual innocence, stating that the plea was a result of being misled to avoid the death penalty.

Kohberger’s new legal team, which includes New York-based attorney Jason Goldman, has filed motions to dismiss Judge Steven Hippler from overseeing the proceedings and has requested a change of venue. Goldman has cautioned the public against assuming they know the full story, suggesting that upcoming evidentiary hearings will address significant unanswered questions regarding how the case reached its current state.
