Bryce Harper video fuels FanDuel gambling controversy and lawsuit
A personalized 21‑second video from Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper was sent by FanDuel to VIP bettor Terry Thompson, who had wagered $18.5 million on the sportsbook and later lost nearly $2 million, leading to foreclosure and psychiatric treatment. Thompson filed a lawsuit against FanDuel and DraftKings alleging that their VIP programs deliberately encourage gambling addiction through perks such as Super Bowl tickets and exclusive offers.
The video, in which Harper greets Thompson by name – “Hey Terry, what’s up brother? … I just wanted to hop on here and wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving” – was provided to FanDuel via the Cameo platform. Reports indicate Harper had no business relationship with FanDuel and was given a script, believing the greeting was a private request rather than a marketing tool.
The incident sparked a backlash on social media, with fans demanding tighter regulation of sports betting promotions and some calling for a ban on online gambling. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board confirmed it is reviewing the matter. FanDuel says it is committed to responsible gaming, while Harper’s representatives have declined comment.
