BSF Assistant Sub-Inspector Shiv Datt dies in Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir

On 31 July 2024, an Assistant Sub‑Inspector of the Border Security Force (BSF) was found dead in the Boniyar area of Baramulla district, Jammu & Kashmir. The officer was identified as Shiv Datt, a 56‑year‑old native of Shoran village in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, serving with the 175th Battalion and attached to E Company.

His body bore a gunshot wound, and senior officials said the injury is consistent with a self‑inflicted shot from his service rifle, suggesting suicide. A team from the Boniyar police station arrived promptly and opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of his death.

The BSF, a paramilitary force, is tasked with securing the international border, preventing infiltration across the Line of Control, and supporting internal security operations in the region, including anti‑smuggling and counter‑insurgency activities.
