BSI clarifies passport chip security and RFID protection
The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has addressed concerns regarding the unauthorized reading of data from electronic passports and identity cards. While some internet advice suggests wrapping documents in aluminum foil to shield electromagnetic signals, the BSI states this is unnecessary.
According to the agency, modern travel documents utilize security mechanisms such as Password Authenticated Connection Establishment (PACE) and the older Basic Access Control (BAC). These protocols are designed to prevent chips from being read without direct access, effectively protecting information from being skimmed through clothing or pockets. For travelers seeking additional peace of mind, the BSI suggests using specialized RFID protection sleeves rather than aluminum foil.
