BSI clarifies that aluminum foil is unnecessary for passport chip protection

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has clarified that wrapping passports in aluminum foil to prevent unauthorized chip reading is unnecessary. While some travelers use foil to shield electromagnetic signals from being intercepted, the BSI states that built-in security mechanisms already protect personal data.

Modern passports and identity cards utilize Password Authenticated Connection Establishment (PACE) to prevent remote reading without direct access. Older documents may still use Basic Access Control (BAC) for compatibility reasons, but both systems are designed to prevent data from being skimmed through items like clothing pockets. For those seeking additional peace of mind, the BSI suggests using specialized RFID protection sleeves rather than aluminum foil.
