BSP MLA Uma Shankar Singh dies at 55, leaving party without assembly seat

Uma Shankar Singh, the Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) lone legislator in the 403‑member Uttar Pradesh Assembly, died at age 55 on August 5‑6, 2026. He had been elected three times from the Rasra constituency in Ballia district and was undergoing treatment for a prolonged illness – reported as cancer and a brain tumour – at a private hospital in Delhi when he passed away.

His death removes the BSP's only voice in the state legislature, a stark decline from its 2007 majority. Party chief Mayawati described the loss as “irreparable,” recalling a close personal bond with Singh and pledging support to his family. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, and Union Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed condolences, highlighting Singh's reputation as a dedicated, honest public servant who worked across party lines.

The vacancy comes ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, raising questions about a possible by‑poll for the Rasra seat and the BSP's future political relevance in the state.
