Bétharram scandal impacts reputation of private education
A survey conducted by the Ifop institute for the Fep-CFDT union reveals that the Bétharram scandal is significantly damaging the reputation of private education. According to the study of 2,141 teachers, 70% believe the image of private schooling in the media is negative, while 73% describe it as caricaturish.
Valérie Ginet, secretary general of the Fep-CFDT, noted that the intense media coverage of physical and sexual violence at Notre-Dame-de-Bétharram and other private institutions has created a “Bétharram prism” that distorts the reality of the profession. The survey indicates that 60% of teachers believe this reputation harms the attractiveness of the teaching profession, and 52% feel it weakens parental trust.
In response to these issues, the French government has increased oversight. Following a plan launched by former Education Minister Élisabeth Borne to inspect 40% of private contract schools within two years, current Minister Édouard Geffray reported that 1,500 controls have led to 442 formal notices and six judicial reports.
