BTL Chairman Mark Lizarraga faces calls for removal by Belizean unions

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) is demanding the immediate removal of Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) Chairman Mark Lizarraga and several board members. The call for resignation follows the fallout from a failed proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications.

NTUCB President Ella Waight stated that the leadership has lost the confidence of workers and the Belizean public due to a lack of honesty and transparency. Union leaders criticized Lizarraga’s decision-making, specifically citing his advocacy for a $90 million purchase of cable companies and his handling of business losses to competitors.

In addition to removing Lizarraga, the NTUCB is calling for the dismissal of directors Moises Cal, Arturo Lizarraga, and Eric Eucey. The unions are also proposing that any future BTL board follow a tripartite structure involving the government, labor, and the business community.
