BTS bypasses new Grammy Asian pop category

The global music industry is debating cultural categorization after the Recording Academy announced a new genre category, Best Asian Pop Music Performance, for the 2027 Grammy Awards. In response to the announcement, the South Korean boy band BTS has decided not to submit their music for consideration in this specific category.

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. defended the decision, stating the category aims to celebrate the growth and diversity of pop artistry in Asia. He clarified that participation in genre-specific categories does not prevent artists from being considered for major General Field awards, such as Album of the Year or Record of the Year.

Despite these assurances, the move has sparked criticism from fans and industry observers who argue that separating Asian artists into a distinct category risks institutional sidelining and reinforces historical hierarchies between Western and non-Western music markets.
